In the home improvement field, there are two basic types of service contractors. There is the general residential contractor who is also known as the jack-of-all-trades. This is the contractor who can fix or repair just about anything. There is also the specialist. This is the service contractor who is an expert in one particular field.
For example, electricians, plumbers and painters would be considered specialists. Contractors that can provide all three services would be considered general residential contractors.
A service contractor can also fall into this category if they have connections. For example, most construction companies work closely with electricians, plumbers and HVAC techs. They do all the building, digging and framing but they let the experts take care of the wiring, plumbing and heating/ac.
If there is a home improvement issue that needs attention, the construction company will hire the specialist to take care of the issue. The specialist usually gives the construction company a price that is lower than normal. The construction company will then add their own fee to the cost of the repair. The final quote is passed on to you, the customer.
In a perfect world, we would be able to hire a specialist whenever a home improvement issue presents itself. However, for some people, this can be costly and inconvenient. If you live in a large home that requires regular maintenance year after year, then hiring specialists is the way to go. If you are not this person or if you buy and sell homes for a living, you may want to consider using general residential contractors.
General residential contractors can save you a lot of money in the long run. Their versatility makes them very convenient for minor to mid-sized jobs. Specialists are recommended for large jobs that may take 5 days or longer.
It is a whole lot easier to deal with one service contractor for all your home improvement needs. Some general contractors provide home maintenance services like carpet cleaning and hardwood floor maintenance. This is great if you are looking to get as much as you can out of one general contractor.
When choosing a service contractor, you must remember to do your homework. Check the contractors credentials, licenses, and be sure that the contractor has liability insurance. It is also good to get 3 or 4 quotes just to be sure you are getting a fair market price.
